High Sodium Levels in Drinking Water System Advisories

The Safe Drinking Water Act, 2002 Regulation 170/03 requires operators of drinking water systems to report sodium levels above 20mg per litre to the local Medical Officer of Health due to the potential risk to public health.

Sodium is an essential dietary element. However, for some individuals who suffer from hypertension, chronic kidney disease or congestive heart failure, restricting the daily intake of sodium is essential in managing their condition. The sodium intake from drinking water may be significant for these individuals, and using an alternative source for drinking water with a sodium concentration below 20mg/l may be appropriate for them.
