Healthy Babies, Healthy Children

Healthy Babies Healthy Children

Healthy Babies Healthy Children (HBHC) is a free, voluntary home visiting program for families who may benefit from additional support during pregnancy, after birth, and until their child(ren) begin school.

How can the HBHC program support your family

If you are eligible for the program, a Public Health Nurse and a Family Home Visitor will work with you and your family. Together, you will set goals that are important to you and decide which support would be most helpful.

The frequency of home visits will depend on your family’s needs.

The program can support you with:

  • Preparing for your baby and for parenthood.
  • Having a healthy pregnancy and birth.
  • Adjusting to life after your baby is born.
  • Taking care of your physical and mental health and well-being.
  • Learning about your baby's sleep, routines and needs.
  • Breastfeeding, infant feeding and healthy eating.
  • Building a strong, healthy relationship with your child.
  • Supporting your child's growth, learning and development.
  • Learning about child safety.
  • Finding programs and services in your community.

What is a Public Health Nurse (PHN)?

A Public Health Nurse (PHN) is a Registered Nurse who works with individuals and families in the community. PHNs provide health information and education, connect families with community resources and services, and support families in understanding their baby or child's health, development, and cues.

What does a Family Home Visitor (FHV) do?

A Family Home Visitor  (FHV) works alongside families to support their parenting goals and build their confidence in their parenting role. They provide encouragement, information, and resources, connect families with appropriate supports, and engage in activities that promote positive interactions, play, and communication between caregivers and their baby or child. They work as part of a team with the PHN to better support you and your family.
