Smoke-Free Ontario Act 2017 and Schools
The Smoke-Free Ontario Act (SFOA) 2017 prohibits the smoking of cannabis and tobacco, as well as the use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) to vape any substance in enclosed public spaces, such as schools.
Smoking and vaping are not only banned within school buildings, but also on school grounds and in any area within 20 metres of school grounds.
It is also prohibited under the SFOA 2017 to sell or supply tobacco or vapour products to a person that is less than 19 years of age.
These laws were put in place to protect staff, students, and members of the general public from second-hand smoke and vapour.
In order to enforce the SFOA 2017, local public health units carry out inspections and respond to complaints regarding smoking and vaping on school property and within 20 metres of school property.
If you witness a smoking or vaping infraction, or the sale or supply of tobacco or vapour products to a person that is less than 19 years of age on school property, please fill out both forms below and send them by fax to the Eastern Ontario Health Unit at 613-938-9707 (Attention: Executive Assistant).
