COVID Alert App
The COVID Alert app was developed by Health Canada to let Canadians know if they may have been exposed to a person infected with COVID-19. The app is a useful tool that can help limit the spread of COVID-19 and prevent outbreaks.
How does the app work?
The app uses Bluetooth technology to exchange random codes with nearby phones that also have the app installed. When someone tests positive for COVID-19, they will receive a one-time key from their local health authority that they can enter in the app. When they enter the one-time key, anyone who has spent time near the infected person (a close contact) will be notified through the app that they may have been exposed. The app does not disclose the identity of the person who tested positive.
Who is considered a close contact?
To be considered a close contact, you must have spent more than 15 minutes less than 2 metres (6 feet) apart from the infected person, over the last 14 days. If you meet the three criteria, the app will notify you that you may have been exposed.
Next steps if you test positive:
If you test positive, you will receive a one-time key to enter in the app. While your identity is not revealed, users who meet the three criteria mentioned above are considered a close contact and will be notified that they may have been exposed.
Users who enter a one-time key in the app will also have the option to provide more details to narrow down when they were likely most contagious. If you don’t provide any details, the app will only upload the random codes it has collected over the last 14 days.
Users who receive an exposure notification from the app should contact their local public health authority for guidance.
How is my privacy protected?
The COVID Alert app does not collect any personally identifiable information from its users. The app therefore has no way of knowing your:
- the place or time you were near someone
- health information
No information is shared without users’ consent.
How do I install the app on my phone?
The COVID Alert app was designed for iOS and Android phones. Head to the App Store or Google Play and search for “COVID Alert.” The more people download and use the app, the safer our community will be.
